White water kayak coaches are excellent leaders and paddlers who are able to develop the skills of paddlers in a structured and student centred way. They coach on grade 2(3) rivers such as the Lune and Leven in Cumbria, the Dee near Llangollen or the Tay in Perthshire.
Great coaches empower students to improve their paddling with appropriate practise tasks that have easily achieved self check feedback.
On our two day training course we will help you develop your coaching, focussing on:
- How to gather good technical and tactical understanding.
- Using observation and analysis skills to set clear goals for students.
- Using the appropriate teaching strategy for the student, environment and learning outcome.
- Setting appropriate practise tasks that give feedback.
- Use of video analysis as a feedback tool.
- Reflective practice.
All students will leave the course with a clear and measurable action plan that maps their route to assessment.
How can Wild River help prepare you for the assessment? |
Great coaches will have an in depth knowledge of the craft in the environment. You might decide to add your knowledge by attending:
- An intermediate or advanced white water skills course.
- Revisit white water leader training to gather more detail and delivery tools.
- Revisiting white water safety and rescue training.
- Create a coaching group and bring us in to mentor you for a day.
- Receive some individualised bespoke training.
How does assessment work? |
+ |
On an assessment candidates will deliver a coaching session to between 2 and 4 students or a minimum of 90 minutes.
To complete the assessment the students must be seen to have developed their paddling skill related to the goals agreed between the candidate and the students.
Over the course of the assessment candidates will be asked to demonstrate the appropriate rescue skills for the environment.
Prior to an assessment you will be given the opportunity to contact the group members to gather information about their ability, equipment needs and aspirations for the day. You will be encouraged to plan the day in detail with logistical support from Wild River if necessary.
Wild River runs single day assessments with dates on the website. Alternatively 1-1 assessments can be set up on dates that suit the individual. |
