What our clients say...

" I had no idea what to expect really and went with an open mind. There was so much in this course I kept wanting more! I loved the bits on the water and wished we could have had more of these. Lots of boats to try. Overall busy, lots of info, interesting and fun!"

"Fantastic course, really enjoyed it!! Plenty of information sent through before the course. Excellent equipment. Got more than I was expecting, learnt loads."

"Could not have asked for better. Really big thank you for making something I was reading into a really enjoyable experience."

"Very good, hard work during the day but rewarded with constructive feedback. Pre-course information great. Kneeling mats for clients were of a great help. The course has highlighted development points and helped part form a structure for improvement – pointed the way for better technical understanding."

Open Water Canoe Coach
(Moderate Water)

As an open water canoe coach you can coach students in large areas of open water upto 500m from the shore with wind up to force 4. You can develop all facets of open water paddling such as precise manoeuvring or use of the wind to aid movement.

Great coaches empower students to improve their paddling with appropriate practise tasks that have easily achieved self check feedback.

Open Water Canoe Coach Assessment

On our two day training course we will help you develop your coaching, focussing on:

  • How to gather good technical and tactical understanding.
  • Using observation and analysis skills to set clear goals for students.
  • Using the appropriate teaching strategy for the student, environment and learning outcome.
  • Setting appropriate practise tasks that give feedback.
  • Use of video analysis as a feedback tool.
  • Reflective practice.

All students will leave the course with a clear and measureable action plan that maps their route to assessment.

How can Wild River help prepare you for the assessment?

Great coaches will have an in depth knowledge of the craft in the environment. You might decide to add your knowledge by:

  • Attending an intermediate or advanced skills course.
  • Revisiting open water canoe leader training to gather more detail and delivery tools.
  • Attend a canoe performance award to gather precise technical knowledge and practice tasks.
  • Create a coaching group and bring us in to mentor you for a day.
  • Receive some individualised bespoke training.

How does assessment work?

+

On an assessment candidates will deliver a coaching session to between 2 and 4 students lasting a minimum of 90 minutes.

To complete the assessment the students must be seen to have developed their paddling skill related to the goals agreed between the candidate and the students.

Over the course of the assessment candidates will be asked to demonstrate the appropriate rescue skills for the environment

Prior to an assessment you will be given the opportunity to contact the students to gather information about their ability, equipment needs and aspirations for the day. You will be encouraged to plan the day in detail with logistical support from Wild River if necessary.

Wild River runs single day assessments with dates on the website. Alternatively 1-1 assessments can be set up on dates that suit the individual.
