British Canoeing

Core Coach Training

This training course is open to a huge range of people. It is designed to give you the underpinning knowledge necessary to coach in a range of different environments. It is an essential prerequisite for anyone who wants to access an assessment for:

  • Sheltered water coach
  • Moderate water coach
  • Open water canoe coach
  • Advanced water coach

Complete the Paddlesport Instructor e-Learning module.

That said we strongly recommend that students paddle their preferred craft at a good standard in sheltered water. See skills assessment page 20 of the course guide - click here. Have a clear understanding of how boats move and can breakdown the manoeuvres in order to facilitate good coaching. Have delivered a number of coaching sessions so they have an appreciation of group management and communication.

Who should do this course?

  • Experienced level 1 coaches who have delivered a season of group sessions and wish to continue their professional development.
  • Club coaches who have been helping club members who wish to develop their coaching ability.
  • Teachers, lecturers and tutors in education who are working with students in a developmental way.
  • Coaches with a range of qualifications and experience who wish to continue their development and update their knowledge.

Course Syllabus:

The syllabus for this course has not been finalised yet but we envisage that it will include the coaching understanding from the previous level 2 training course.

It seems likely that this course will look at:

  • Student profiling
  • Observation and analysis strategies
  • Selecting the appropriate delivery method
  • The importance of practice structures
  • Managing feedback in a variety of ways
  • Using reflective practice to aid longterm learning

2 days
Staff to student ratios 1 tutor to 4 students or 2 tutors to 8 students. Please note there is a minimum number of students of 4. This has been set by British Canoeing.

At present there is no pre-registration with British Canoeing for this course.

On this course you will have the opportunity to use our fleet of Dagger white water kayaks; a range of high quality VE canoe and kayak paddles; our fleet of Royalex canoes; a variety of sea kayaks and touring boats, including Wllderness Systems sea kayaks.

Course fee: £200 (£375 if booked with Discipline Specific Coach Training)


Full Home Nation Association Membership.

Complete Paddlesport Instructor e-Learning.

You will also need a base level of knowledge about the discipline(s) you wish to coach.
