Advanced white water kayak coaches run great sessions for paddlers in grade 4 whitewater. You might develop a paddler’s blade placement and timing or encourage better tactical choices with more precise river reading. Whilst doing this you will create an empowering learning environment and allow your students to leave with precise action points
Great coaches allow students to improve their paddling with appropriate practise tasks that have easily achieved self check feedback.
On our two day training course we will help you develop your coaching, focussing on:
- How to gather good technical and tactical understanding.
- Using observation and analysis skills to set clear goals for students.
- Using the appropriate teaching strategy for the student, environment and learning outcome.
- Setting appropriate practise tasks that give feedback.
- Use of video analysis as a feedback tool.
- Reflective practice.
All students will leave the course with a clear and measureable action plan that maps their route to assessment.
How can Wild River help prepare you for the assessment? |
Great coaches will have an in depth knowledge of the craft in the environment. You might decide to add your knowledge by:
- Attending an advanced whitewater skills course.
- Revisiting safety and rescue training.
- Revisiting advanced leader training to pick up the nuances of delivery and technique.
- Creating a coaching group and bringing us in to mentor you for a day.
- Receiving some individualised bespoke training.
How does assessment work? |
+
|
On an assessment candidates will deliver a coaching session to between 2 and 4 students lasting a minimum of 90 minutes.
To complete the assessment the students must be seen to have developed their paddling skill related to the goals agreed between the candidate and the students.
Over the course of the assessment candidates will be asked to demonstrate the appropriate rescue skills for the environment.
Prior to an assessment you will be given the opportunity to contact the students to gather information about their ability, equipment needs and aspirations for the day. You will be encouraged to plan the day in detail with logistical support from Wild River if necessary.
Wild River runs single day assessments with dates on the website. Alternatively 1-1 assessments can be set up on dates that suit the individual. It is advised that assessments may need a fairly flexible approach to venue choice so as to get good water levels. |
