Introduction to Sea Kayaking

The Lake District has some of the best kayak journeys in the UK. We can paddle sea kayaks on stunning coastline or magnificent lakes.

This two day introductory course provides the essential knowledge to allow you to safely use a sea kayak on sheltered water. The course will be tailored to your specific requirements but would include:

• Choosing the right sea kayak.
• How to store and transport your sea kayak.
• Where you can paddle your kayak.
• Equipment and accessories especially suitable clothing and safety flotation.
• Beginning to efficiently and effectively paddle your sea kayak.
• How to prevent incidents and accidents by staying safe whilst paddling; this will include choice of location, weather effects, methods of summoning. assistance, self rescues and assisted rescues.
• Caring for the environment.

All courses start with an introduction to your equipment using a range of high quality kayaks. After a fitting session we will take you on some easy water and start to coach you in the skills required for journeying in a sea kayak. From there we will move you on at your own pace setting challenges that will suit you.

Equipment

For this course we can provide the following:

• Sea kayak
• Paddle
• Buoyancy aid
• Helmet

If you already have the above equipment, please bring it along.

We would like you to bring:

• Clothing suitable for white water paddling such as a dry cag and dry trousers and thermals, or dry suit and thermals, or waterproof trousers and jacket with thermal layer and extra layers that we can carry for you on the journey.
• Sturdy footwear such as trainers or substantial wet boots.
• Lunch and hot drink.
