British Canoeing

White Water Kayak Coach Assessment (Advanced Water)

The assessment will take place over one day. Candidates will be assessed working with a ‘real’ group of paddlers at, or around, 4 Star technical standard on grade 2/3 white water. The day will consist of two coaching sessions; candidates will be expected to show sound performance that provides suitable progressions and coaching to the needs of the learners. Personal paddling, safety management, and leadership skills will be assessed alongside coaching performance. Coaching practice will be assessed at a similar standard to that expected at British Canoeing Level 2, although now applied in a more dynamic and changing environment.

This one-day assessment looking at your British Canoeing coaching knowledge applied to a moderate water environment.

After successful completion of this award you can coach all levels of performers on grade 2 white water and start working on your 3 star assessor logbook.

Preparation for Assessment

Whilst working with students in your development phase between discipline specific training and assessment we recommend that you keep a record of the learning. This could be via session plans and reviews or a simple logbook. It could also be documented and a different way that suits you.

We will also want to read your coaching episode in preparation for the professional discussion.

Two weeks prior to the assessment we will need:

  • Proof of pre-requisites check from British Canoeing.
  • A completed professional discussion task.
  • A record of your experience.

For candidates proceeding to assessment using training courses prior to January 2018 the following applies:

If your Level 2 coach training is now out of date then you should contact British Canoeing and request an extension.

If it is still in date then you should contact British Canoeing and inform them which new coach award you are planning to complete. They will transfer your registration to the new system. You can use the following to meet the pre-requisites:

  • We will assess you at the correct standard as stated in the syllabus.
  • We will make sure you fully understand what you need to do.
  • We will make sure that the assessment environment is at the right standard, eg a grade 2 river for 4 star canoe assessments.
  • We will give you as much time as possible to show what you can do.
  • We will take you through the assessment process in short steps that are clear and simple.
  • If the assessment involves leadership or coaching of others we will do our best to bring real students for you to coach or lead.
  • Our decisions will be made based solely on performance and not with any bias of any sort.
  • We will give you a clear action plan for development at the end of the assessment.
  • All our assessment team are encouraged to smile and give you a hug when you need it.

Venues

There are a wide range of rivers available to use in Cumbria. The final choice of venue will be made in the days prior to the start of the course. You will be told the exact meeting place for the first morning a couple of days before the course.

If water levels in Cumbria don’t seem to be appropriate we will move the course to a suitable venue. North west Scotland is a very good possibility, however North Wales and Eastern Scotland are also possible venues.  As the course gets closer we will chat about venues as we get a better picture of water levels.
